Credit Score Milestones for Homeownership
Start by knowing exactly where you stand. You are entitled to one free report per year from each of the three bureaus — Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion — at AnnualCreditReport.com. Review every line for errors, outdated accounts, or fraudulent activity.
Visit AnnualCreditReport.com →Up to 1 in 5 credit reports contain errors that negatively impact your score. If you find inaccurate information — a wrong balance, a paid account still showing as delinquent, or an account that isn't yours — dispute it directly with the bureau in writing. Errors must be investigated within 30 days.
Learn how to dispute →Payment history accounts for 35% of your FICO score — it is the single most impactful factor. Set up autopay for at least the minimum payment on every account. Even one missed payment can drop your score by 50–100 points and stay on your report for 7 years.
Credit utilization — how much of your available credit you are using — makes up 30% of your score. Aim to keep each card below 30% of its limit, and ideally below 10% for maximum impact. Paying down balances or requesting a credit limit increase can both help.
Every time you apply for new credit, a hard inquiry is recorded and can temporarily lower your score by 5–10 points. While you are actively rebuilding, avoid applying for new cards, car loans, or financing. Focus on strengthening what you already have.
If you have limited credit history, a secured credit card or a credit-builder loan can help you establish positive payment history quickly. Use the card for small, routine purchases and pay the full balance each month. Consistent, responsible use is what lenders want to see.
